retreat in nepal

I want to share an important secret with you...

All of this time, while you have been searching for answers; for fulfillment; for joy; for love and happiness outside of yourself - in your career, in your relationships, in your struggles and goals, in your chasing of desires...

...that which you seek has been inside of you all along.

There is a place inside you that is your true Home.

A place that knows only serenity, complete stillness and fulfillment.

I call this place the peace within.

"But if this place is inside me, how come I have never found it?" ....I can just hear you asking...

Because it has become hidden...buried under layers of tension; years of work, routine and stress; ingrained habits of ignoring your inner voice, putting others first and not taking time for yourself. But although it has become buried, it has never been lost to you, there is nothing you can do to destroy this sacred place.

You can re-discover this peace within. When you reconnect with it, I can guarantee that shift will happen..

Regardless of what's going on in your life, you can find a sense of ease...even when things get hard.

You can become guided by that excellent internal navigation system - your intuition.

You can get clear on what serves you and whats doesn't it, and it becomes simpler to just let go.

Kindness, joy and compassion can become your natural state of being.

You can give yourself and your life space...and you can begin to flourish into the beautiful potential you were born with.

You can become fulfilled from within. You can come Home.

Retreat in Nepal

There are places in this world where this peace was never lost....

Where the spiritual and the sacred are a part of everyday life.

Where eons of wisdom and deep knowledge have accumulated to give us a road map on the path Home.

The Himalayas have long been known as the world's Shangri-La, that mythical utopian paradise of harmony and peace.

Hundreds of generations of rishis, yogis, monks and sages have been called to this sacred place to meditate and unravel the mysteries within.

Now it is your turn to follow this calling.

Are you ready to heed this call and join us on this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime journey to the Himalayas of Nepal?

My name is Sharee James, I am a naturopath, and a yoga and meditation teacher who has been leading group retreats in Nepal since 2010.

It really is a dream come true to do this work and to facilitate people like you on your journey towards wholeness. I live for this stuff.

I love to see that shift in your eyes when you have experienced something extraordinary.

The tears that well up as you take in your first Himalayan panorama.

The love and warmth within the group that grows each day we spend together blows me away every time.

I love the way your face starts to really relax and shine brightly by about day 5.

I love listening to the insights you get as a result of taking time out and taking a step back from your daily life.

Most of all I love it when I hear from you several months after the retreat about how your life has changed since coming home.

That you've started a spiritual practice.

Taken up yoga. Implemented a new self-care routine.

Caught up with new friends made on the retreat.

Ended that unhealthy job or relationship.

Found your calling.

Started using techniques we have taught in your everyday life.

Found the courage to overcome challenges that were holding you back.

SHIFT happens when you go on retreat and it is an honour for me to be a part of your journey.

Your beautiful journey includes.....

Daily Yoga & Meditation...

Be still, the quieter you become the more you can hear" - Ram Dass

Through our daily yoga and meditation classes you will be able to calm your mind and release built up stress and tension held in your body.

You will be able to re-energise and re-centre.

You will come back to your breath and to the moment.

You will learn a simple meditation practice, and our yoga is based on restorative, yin and gentle flow sequences to help you relax and open. (I.e -it i suitable for all levels and ages with an emphasis on cultivating presence and inner peace rather than turning into a human pretzel!)

The Perfect Place to Unwind....

During our journey we stay in 2 gorgeous places: The Park Village Resort on the outskirts of Kathmandu, surrounded by Buddhist and Hindu holy sites; and Begnas Lake Resort in Pokhara, a stunning lakeside retreat surrounded by Himalayan vistas.

Whether we are aware of it or not, we are all sensitive to our surroundings, and our

environment has a significant effect on our mood and energy. The resorts we stay at have been carefully chosen for their special atmosphere, peaceful natural surroundings, quality accommodation and access to healing therapies and pampering with in-house Ayurvedic wellness centres.

Fascinating Guided Tours...

I have always been fascinated by travel and exploring different cultures and lands.

The world is so much bigger than we realise and experiencing other ways of life is transformative in itself.

For this reason our program is not about just spending 10 days cooped up at a retreat centre, it is an authentic travel experience in it's own right!

Local guides will take us on a journey of exploration through Buddhist monasteries, Hindu temples, royal squares with medieval architecture, local villages and a visit to a local school, as well as hiking in the natural surrounds and the opportunity to witness an unforgettable sunrise on a mountaintop in the Himalayas. It truly is an amazing experience.

An Incredible Himalayan Experience...

The Himalayas.

What can I say? No words can describe their astounding beauty and power. One of the marvels of this planet, they are truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a place that everyone should see before they die.

It is said that the Himalayas change you...that they always gift you with something.

Nepal group yoga retreat

A new way of seeing the world. A moment where time stands still. You will be different, these mountains in some small way at least, will change you forever.

Lessons in Yogic Philosophy & Eastern Spirituality

The cultures of the far-east have an advanced and rich spiritual heritage.

Our philosophy classes will help you to integrate this wisdom into your own life as you gain an understanding of your egoic self vs your true nature; the dilemma of egoic happiness and how to find true, lasting happiness; how to bring peace and harmony into your daily life, attitudes, behaviours and interactions with others;

how to reduce the mental chatter in your mind and how to incorporate a spiritual practice into your routine back home.

Learn How To Use Tibetan Healing Bowls

This special workshop with renowned 4th generation Tibetan Sound Healer Sudeep Lamsal will astound you. Tap into your inner healer and learn how to use the bowls on yourself and others to reduce pain, tension, headaches, eyestrain, joint inflammation and more.

The bowls can also be used for meditation, to purify the energies in your home and to charge water.

Sudeep will also help you to discern the difference between genuine hand-made Tibetan healing bowls and the inferior mass-produced "tourist" bowls.

Connection with Like-Minded Souls

There is a certain magic that occurs in groups of like-minded people, an amplification of energies and an upliftment that affects everyone involved.

Being part of a conscious community or group is something that is sadly lacking in our culture these days but is sorely needed.

Many beautiful friendships and connections have been forged within our groups over the years and have continued to blossom long after the retreat has ended.

Tools & Insights to Take Back Home

This whole journey has been designed so that you can discover the treasure within you, your spiritual Home, and to have the tools and the knowledge to continue to live from this place when you return to your daily life.

Now that you have reconnected with the inner sat-nav of your intuition, we don't want you to lose it again so we have provided you with plenty of resources to guide you back to your path when you are no longer in the beauty of the Himalayas.

Healing & Pampering

The retreat centres I have chosen both feature Ayurvedic wellness spas so that you have the option to indulge in various therapeutic treatments if desired, from massage and other relaxation techniques to beauty treatments like body scrubs and facials. (That picture on the left by the way isn't just a pretty stock photo - that's actually where we stay on Begnas Lake!)

Testimonials

"I had an absolutely amazing time in Nepal. Sharee and her assistant Sally were the perfect tour leaders and everything ran like clockwork.

It was evident that much thought and love went into making it the best Nepal adventure possible. I highly recommend Sharee and Ashima Journeys, and she could not have been more helpful or lovely. I met some truly wonderful people and definitely take with me many incredible memories and blessings."

- Mark Johnson, New Zealand

"Ashima Journeys has achieved the perfect balance between the spiritual and the cultural aspects of this amazing country. Gorgeous accommodation in beautiful surroundings, great Nepali food, awesome temples, traditional villages, fantastic shopping, stunning views of the Himalayas, colourful walks and bus rides, enjoyable and educational workshops, peaceful yoga and meditation; this is a unique Nepal experience. The Himalayas have touched my heart in a way that has changed me forever."

- Jenny Raco, Australia

“Thank you Sharee for an amazing trip to Nepal. You gave me a taste of what Nepal has to offer and everyday brought a new experience. The trip was so well organised and I always felt safe in your capable hands.

Practicing yoga taught me so much about myself and has enabled me to grow as a teacher and a person. I loved learning about the healing powers of the singing bowl and I have used it often since being home. There is a now a little bit of Nepal in my heart and when I close my eyes I can see the sunrise over the Himalayas and again feel the peace of that moment.”

- Michelle Donath, Australia

"A few months down the track I wanted to say such a big thank you for guiding us though such an awesome journey in Nepal. To be perfectly honest I think the tour was wonderfully varied yet comprehensive...as was the yoga practice. I could not have sat down and created a more perfect program.

I am still feeling the effects of such a magnificent place....and of course the continued unfoldment that surely takes place when one has had such an experience.

I deeply appreciate your time, friendship, guidance, kindness and willingness to accept us all - and you allowed us the time and space to take each day as we needed to take it."

- Jane Wilson, Australia

"For me Ashima Journeys was a wonderful start for my Nepal trip because I wouldn't have been brave enough to go on my own. It was really nice to have Sharee as a guide, who really has a lot of experience. She always had an ear for any questions, and I think I had a lot. She knows where to go and what to do best and so the journey was a really good mix of everything.

My favourite place was the Boudha stupa, a very special place with really special energy. I was lucky that the monks offered to write the names of my family and friends on prayer flags and hung them from the top of the stupa. What a blessing! All in all, a wonderful trip."

- Elena Zipp, Germany

"You both did an excellent job, right from the point where you picked me up from the airport all the way to the end. This is the first group venture I have participated in where I really honestly couldn't find anything to complain about or criticize in the smallest way and I attribute that to your own yogic personalities. Thank you very much."

- Jayshree Kantilal, Singapore

"A part of me changed because of the Nepal experience but I didn’t notice until I got home. I find I have an inner calmness that wasn’t there before and when I thought about why this might be I realized that I am no longer searching for the next best thing. The grass isn’t greener and the only way I can be truly happy is to find it in myself. All very deep, but friends say they have noticed a change which, I feel, is all good. The trip was a wonderful experience but the special people I was lucky enough to be sharing the experience with made it magical. I will definitely be looking out for the next retreat you do Sharee."

- Ian Woodley, Canada

"Our trip was perfect in every aspect. We learned about other cultures and philosophies...we learned about ourselves. We enjoyed as we hiked and traveled the great beauty of the country we were in and its people and got to interact with them one on one and learn their many customs and personal lifestyles. We became a sociable family of travelers yet had time for reflection and relaxation and exploring on our own.

You had every aspect of our trip well planned out and beautifully coordinated to maximize our visit. The accommodations were perfectly suited to the intention of our visit. I truly could not say enough great things about our trip ... it was magical . As a person you reflect what you teach in your yoga philosophy and that comes across in your beautiful spirit and personality."

- Sally Stephenson, United States

"Ashima Journeys is a professional, informative, culturally respectful organisation providing a very caring and hospitable environment to experience a life-changing adventure. The tour was value for money, enjoyable and certainly will be very memorable. A special thank-you to Sharee for creating such an amazing holiday, I am so appreciative of you to organise such an adventure and to attract a beautiful, dynamic group."

- Kym Brooker, Australia

"I was not sure what this trip was going to offer me, but I knew what I wanted from it and that was to recharge myself, meet new people and prepare for the future. That's exactly what I got. Thank you."

- Gary Jubelin, Australia

“I recently had the privilege of travelling to Nepal. This trip was for me, a spiritual quest and I found that Sharee and her enlightened team of practitioners fulfilled my requirements.

Tour guide “Dip” with his profound wealth of knowledge guided us around Kathmandu Valley with ease and comfort. I was brought a sense of calmness with the yoga and meditation practice. Questions I asked Raja were answered with such depth that several times I was reduced to tears...

I was sad when my journey came to an end and I had to leave these people that had such an impact on my life. In the future I hope I will be fortunate enough to join Sharee once again as she delivers a tour that feeds your soul completely and yet leaves you empty at the same time because you have to say goodbye.”

- Deb Smith, Australia

"I sincerely want to thank you Sharee for arranging the Nepal trip, I know it wasn’t easy. I watched as you ran around making sure everything was just perfect - you were great!

Something shifted in me during my time in Nepal. It was like I was able to see life with a clarity that I didn’t have before, and everything became brighter, happier and I, more accepting. I learnt things about myself that I wasn’t aware of before, I learnt to like me and the world around me. Thank you so much!"

- Noelene Garner, Australia

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I get to Kathmandu?

A. Nepal has one small (rather cute!) international airport, Tribhuvan International Airport, just east of Kathmandu.

There are no direct long-distance flights to Nepal, travelling from Europe, the Americas or Australasia will always involve a stop in the Middle East or Asia. During the trekking season of October and November flights to Kathmandu can sell out quickly, so arranging your flights a few months in advance is recommended.

From Australia and New Zealand there are easy connections through Bangkok, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Hong Kong. Air Asia, The Flight Centre and STA Travel, usually have good deals.

From the UK and Ireland there are convenient connections from London, Dublin, Edinburgh and other regional airports with Etihad, Gulf Air and Qatar Airways, changing in the Gulf. Try The Flight Centre (UK) and STA Travel (UK).

From Continental Europe Etihad, Qatar Airways and Gulf Air all offer smooth connections through the Middle East from Paris, Frankfurt and other cities. Try Flightbookers and STA Travel.

From the USA and Canada there are many options, either east or west around the globe. West involves a change in Asia through Seol, Bangkok, Hong Kong or Singapore. Flying east usually involves a stop in Europe, then again in the Gulf or India. Affordable fares may be found at Third Eye Travel, Angel Travel, Cheap Tickets and Expedia.

Q. What time should I fly in/out of Kathmandu?

A. The retreat officially begins on the first day with a welcoming ceremony and dinner at 6pm. Many participants choose to fly in on that day several hours before. Some participants choose to arrive a day or two early and rest up from their flight. We can arrange extra nights at the hotel for the special price of $140 USD per night, or you are of course welcome to book your own

accommodation at another hotel prior to the retreat and join us on the first day.

The retreat ends after breakfast (around 9am) on the last day and most guests leave later that day, with some choosing to have an extra night or two at the hotel, which again can be arranged.

Q. Can I get a single room?

A. Yes, depending on availability. An additional single supplement of $500 USD applies.

Q. Can I be paired with a roommate if I am travelling solo?

A. We will do our very best to pair you with a roommate, and seeing as most participants travel solo it shouldn't be a problem.

We pair people of the same gender. If for some reason we cannot pair you with a roommate, we will have to charge the single supplement of $500 USD to cover the room costs. Those who book in earliest get first priority in terms of room choices and getting paired up.

Q. What is the maximum group size?

A. We cap the group at a maximum of 16 participants. This is an ideal number as it is small enough to be manageable and intimate but large enough for diversity and fun!

Q. How much yoga and meditation experience do I need?

A. There is no prerequisite level of yoga experience required to join our tours. We have had guests attend who have never done yoga in their lives, right through to professional yoga teachers, and all participants have said that they have benefited greatly from our classes. The main

focus in our yoga lessons is to bring the true Eastern philosophy of yoga into your practice, which is to bring your awareness into the present moment. In other words, it is not about tying yourself up in knots, but bringing your mind back in tune with your body and your breath, to achieve greater inner peace. For this reason, we not only practice asanas (physical postures) , but pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation as well.

Q. What is the climate/weather like in Nepal? (Am I going to be cold?!)

A. I know what you're probably imagining when you think of Nepal - snow, yaks, sherpas and woolly hats - am I right?!

Rest assured, the weather will be lovely! (It's mainly only cold like that when you are at really high altitude.)

For our group retreat in October, the weather is usually about 25 - 30 degrees Celsius (77 - 86 F) during the day

in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but it will be a bit cooler when we head up into the mountains for our sunrise Himalayan viewing and sometimes in the evenings, so some warm clothes are recommended, but no special gear is required. We will provide you with a suggested packing list upon registration.

And there are pools at the resorts, so you may want to bring your bathers as well!

Q. What will the food be like?

A. Delicious, abundant and healthy! We dine buffet or banquet style for most meals and the food is predominantly vegetarian with some fish and chicken options. The resort in Pokhara grows it's own fruit and vegetables and uses free range chicken and locally sourced fish. Many of the meals are Nepalese style (lightly spiced curries and rice, similar to Indian cuisine but not as creamy or hot as well as Chinese-inspired dishes). We always have a few non-spicy dishes available too for people who do not like spices, and if you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

Q. Will we be at high altitude? Is there a risk of altitude sickness?

A. Nah, no need to worry about that! Though we will be surrounded by stunning Himalayan views during our stay in Pokhara, the altitude of the resort is only 827m above sea level. Even when we go to the top of Saranagkot mountain for the Himalayan sunrise viewing, it will be at an altitude of

about 1500m - high enough for incredible views but not high enough to experience the discomfort of altitude sickness.

Q. Do I require a visa to enter Nepal?

A. All foreigners except Indians must obtain a visa to enter Nepal

The visa costs $30 USD for 15 days and is available at the airport when you arrive. Upon registration, I will send out a document on the visa process and other important info to help you fully prepare for the trip.

Q. I have never travelled to a developing country before, will I experience culture shock?

A. Unlikely, though it is always possible - but we will take excellent care of you if you do!

While not common, culture shock can be experienced by anyone, especially if it is your first time visiting a country that is really different from your own. Symptoms can range from mild bewilderment or annoyance to more extreme fear, anxiety or anger.

Nepal is a developing country, and seeing real poverty can sometimes be confronting for a first time traveler. Add to this strange sounds and smells and being away from home, it is not hard to see how some people can feel overwhelmed initially.

My advice is: go with the flow, embrace your feelings and most

importantly let me know what is going on for you so I can support you. Even if you feel overwhelmed at first, you will soon find your feet and will start noticing all of the unusual and interesting things you don't see at home, and it will become a fascinating and eye-opening experience that you will never forget!

If it makes you feel better, we have had many guests in the past that have never travelled before, and while a few of them experienced a few moments of bewilderment at first, ALL of them settled in and LOVED the whole experience by the end, honest-to-goodness.

(On the whole though, most travellers are mainly just bewildered by the random cows on the street and wonder who they belong to...

The answer? NO ONE! They are free to roam and are loved by all ;)

Q. Has the 2015 earthquake affected the itinerary of this trip to Nepal? Is it safe to go?

A. Let me clarify firstly that I definitely would not be going ahead with the retreat if I thought it was unsafe or if I thought the aftermath of the quake would in any way prevent me from delivering an awesome experience for my clients. I would much rather just not go ahead with it

than deliver something mediocre.

The quake hit in May 2015 and I took my group as planned in October - and we had an awesome time!

Contrary to how it may have looked in the news, most of Nepal remains undamaged from the quake, especially the areas we visit.

When we are in Kathmandu, we stay on the outskirts of the city in a lovely hotel on acres of gardens and surrounded by farms. The hotel experienced no damage from the quake and in fact housed some of the rescue workers there during the rescue operations. And the second area we stay at (beautiful Pokhara) is also completely unharmed, in fact the whole district and nearby town experienced no damage at all. So for us, the only real impact when we go over there is the fact that some temples we usually visit collapsed which is a shame, but the vast majority of the temple complexes are ok...and are still magnificent to see.

Of course things will not be totally repaired when we get there, being such a poor country, development is slow and we may see some damaged buildings when we visit the temple areas in Kathmandu. But if you are imagining a disaster ground completely obliterated, it's not like that at all!

And on another level, sometimes we learn the most by visiting places like these, that are so different to our own fortunate countries. I believe the fortitude and gentle grace of the Nepali people teach us Westerners so much about life, and the last thing they need is for us to turn our back on them now when they need our tourist dollars the most.

Q. Can I see a day-by-day breakdown of the full itinerary?

A. Yep, you sure can.

Contact me here and I will email you a beautifully detailed PDF version of the full itineray so you can find out exactly what the whole trip involves and see how totally awesome each day is!

Q. I think I wanna come....but it is a big decision and I am not 100% sure, can I talk it over with you and see if it is right for me?

A. Yes, I think that is a great idea.

You may not know me from a bar of soap, and so you may be feeling some understandable hesitation about whether you want to come to Nepal with me! Better to have a chat first and suss me out for yourself...

And rest assured, I will give you very honest information as to whether I think the trip is a good fit for you or not. I care a lot about the dynamics of our group and don't want to take people just for the numbers - if I think it is not right for you I will say so, I only want folks in the group who are perfectly suited to this adventure so that we can all have a great time!

Contact me here and include your phone number and country code and I will happily give you a call.

Q. Ok, I SO wanna come, how do I book?!

A. Great! Contact me here and I will send you a registration form, deposit details and a preparation guide and answer any other questions you may have.

I would much rather just not go ahead with it than deliver something mediocre.
